“Pendant with Silver Bezel” Detroit Agate Collection
Detroit Agate "Fordite" pendant with silver bail and chain. Detroit Agate, also known as Fordite, is a term for polished pieces of finely layered paint masses from automobile factories. The masses consist of automotive paint which has hardened sufficiently to be cut and polished. It was formed from the buildup of layers of enamel paint slag on tracks and skids on which cars were painted, which have been baked numerous times. This material has been upcycled and refined into beautiful pieces of jewelry. Manufacturing facilities have more recently streamlined the car-making process such that there is now very little overspray of paint — Detroit Agate takes us on a walk through history, and due to efficiency improvements, it will never be made again.
